Sink stoppers are a great help when it comes to cleaning dishes in the kitchen or soaking clothes in a sink, allowing you to wash with your hands properly. However, things can get really messy when the sink stopper itself gets clogged. Therefore today I am going to talk on how to remove bathroom sink stopper in easy way!
How to Remove Bathroom Sink Stopper
It can be hair, food waste, or any random thing that causes your sink stopper to clog. To unclog your sink stopper, only a few tools are needed.
Before starting, let’s take a look at the items you need to remove your sink stopper!
- Adjustable wrench
- Pliers
- Screwdriver
- Flashlight
- Bucket or bowl (to catch any water)
First things first! Prepare your workstation, which means cleaning up your cabinets under the sink and setting your tools accordingly so that when you need them, you can easily grab them.
And put it in your bucket or bowl to avoid any unnecessary spills on your bathroom or kitchen floor once you disconnect the plumbing.
The sink stopper can be removed by hand; there’s no need for any such special tools to remove the metal stopper. Just pull the stopper and twist it around. Even if it doesn’t come out, you can remove it from under the sink.
Find the stopper mechanism
Under the sink, you have to find a horizontal rod. This rod connects the stopper to a metal strap with holes. If it’s too dark, use a flashlight to see better. This rod moves up and down when you operate the sink lever, raising and lowering the stopper.
Disconnect the pivot rod
With the adjustable wrench, disconnect the horizontal rod and pivot nut that is still attached to the sink drain. Remember to put the bucket or bowl right underneath it in case water comes out.
Remove the stopper
Now that the pivot rod is out, you can simply plug out the stopper from the sink. It could be stuck because of the gunk; just wiggle it gently back and forth with a slow pull.
Clean up the stopper and the inside of the drain
Once you remove the stopper from the sink, clean out the gunk thoroughly with your hand. Use warm or hot water once, and wash it out with detergent. You can also use the vinegar to clean the stopper. Inspect if there are any damages because of the gunk in the stopper or around the sink.
Reassembling the sink stopper
Once the stopper is cleaned all too well, reinsert the stopper in the drain, and from under the sink, attach the pivot rod by aligning it with the hole in the stopper mechanism. Attach the nut too with the adjustable wrench carefully!

Checking the sink stopper
Once reassembling the sink stopper, you might want to check out the stopper to see if it’s working properly or not by simply filling the sink with water and testing the lever. Look out if there’s any leak under the sink.
